I really enjoyed reading your post and learning about your experiences as a learner and a teacher. I can relate to your fascination with how much children learn in the early years, and I think it’s so powerful that your work as a nanny helped shape your understanding of learning. The past four years of school taught me how much learning happens in the first five years of life and that understanding still blows my mind. I also connect with your point about learning never being linear. It is always evolving (I always think ebb and flow) and the way you described integrating prior knowledge and life experiences as an adult learner really resonated with me.
I loved how you tied constructivist theory and Keller’s idea of relevance to your classroom practice. Your example of taking students to the nature park and using the plant cards and then making cedar tea, really proved that. It shows how hands-on learning and real-world connections can make concepts stick and motivate students. I’m curious what strategies you use when you need to encourage students who might initially struggle to see the relevance of a lesson?
Overall, your post was engaging and full of thoughtful examples. I also appreciated the images and video you included, they really helped me visualize your teaching approach. I’m looking forward to following your reflections!
